Revolutionizing Retail and Healthcare: The DS8100 Series

Mark Fountain's Award-Winning Handheld Imager Transforms Barcode Scanning

In an era where efficiency is paramount, the DS8100 Series handheld imager by Mark Fountain is revolutionizing both retail and healthcare sectors. This innovative device, winner of the Silver A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award in 2017, is designed to enhance the checkout experience and reduce the spread of bacteria in healthcare settings.

The inspiration behind the DS8100 Series stemmed from the need for a high-performance, cordless scanner capable of capturing virtually any barcode reliably. The checkout experience in retail is crucial to the shopper’s lasting impression, and the quality of this experience is heavily dependent upon the performance of the scanner. Similarly, the healthcare sector required a device with additional features specific to their market, including features that reduce the spread of bacteria.

What sets the DS8100 Series apart from other devices is its superior scan range and PRZM technology, enabling it to read virtually any barcode. It can capture damaged or misprinted barcodes, multiple barcodes simultaneously, and has full-page document capture. The smart battery has the power to scan continuously for 24 hours, has at-a-glance battery level indication, and is removable without tools for easy serviceability.

The device is designed for easy interaction. Two cradles were designed allowing for simple insertion/removal and can sit on desktops, or be mounted to walls or mobile workstations. Pairing of the device occurs automatically upon insertion. Misplaced devices are easily found using the pager button. The healthcare presentation cradle has a magnet to increase security when used on mobile workstations. The healthcare device has a softer green aimer and white illumination for use around patients. It can also act as a task light in patients’ rooms.

The project started in January 2015 and was launched in November 2016. One of the creative challenges was creating a series of devices that had shared core elements and cradles, but were also able to be developed into specific SKUs for the different markets. This included creating corded and cordless versions of these SKUs and creating a platform for other devices in the scanner portfolio.

The DS8100 series hand-held scanner is designed for retail and warehouse use. Its clean lines and light and dark colorways fit seamlessly into any retail environment. High visibility LEDs, audio, and tactile feedback allow easy confirmation of a positive scan. The two cradle options increase the device’s versatility by offering presentation-style hands-free scanning and multiple mounting options. The healthcare variant uses plastics resistant to medical-grade cleaning products, reduces bacteria traps with a flush silicon seal, and tailors the user experience for use in a hospital environment.

Mark Fountain's DS8100 Series handheld imager is a testament to the power of design and innovation in transforming everyday experiences. Its unique properties and versatile functionality make it a game-changer in both retail and healthcare sectors. With its award-winning design and superior performance, the DS8100 Series is setting new standards in the world of handheld imagers.
